Last post for the day. Whew! Not bad for the first month of 2011.

A book a month was one of the goals I fell short last year. I’m making up this year.
January read is “Pharaoh” by Valerio Massimo Manfredi.

Despite having at least 10 unread books on my nightstand, I picked up this book one time I was at a bookstore. Mainly because of the cover. Hehe. And also because I have a slight interest on Egyptology but never got around to feed it. #foreverregretfulaboutnotgettinganegyptologydegree

William Blake, a disgraced Egyptologist, is commissioned by a mining company to investigate an untouched tomb of a Pharaoh they discovered miles from the Valley of the Kings. He would soon find out that the identity of the individual buried in the tomb could shatter the foundations of major religions.

It isn’t an epic read and yet it cost me many late nights. The romance part kinda put me off. That, however, isn’t a significant part so it’s forgivable. The plot and historical references are very interesting.

My rating: 3/5. Enjoyable read altogether.

All About Marriage

January 31, 2011 § Leave a comment

2nd post for the night. You can tell I’m cramming a month’s worth of posts here. *breathes* okay here we go.

“All About Marriage” is a drama I have been following for 7 months. It’s a Korean family drama with 56 episodes. Yes! 56! I didn’t actually watch all of the episodes but I made it a point to watch “pivotal” episodes. =D The subbed broadcast on KBS World (Channel 55 on Sky Cable Cebu) ended this month.

As this is a “marriage” drama, I can’t totally relate to it (being the single person I am). But surprisingly, I got drawn to it. Not only me, but one of my brothers too. Echan got hooked a few episodes before me. And since we only have 1 tv connected to the cable service, Aaron (a cousin) and I had no choice but to watch it too.

The whole drama revolves around the Kim family and the relationships of the three children. The main character however is the oldest son’s wife, Nam Jungim.

Jungim supported her husband Taeho through graduate school until finally he becomes a professor at a university. Their happiness however is short-lived as Taeho meets Seoyoung, a beautiful and intelligent young woman. Taeho and Seoyoung would have a more-than-friends but not-quite-lovers relationship and this ultimately leads to Jungim’s and Taeho’s divorce.

Although I hate to admit it (because I love the drama XD), the drama drags on at times and it’s apparent that the writers had to stretch the plot so much to cover 56 episodes. It’s also a bit of a disappointment that the whole drama (conflicts and all) ties up in only 2 episodes. Talk about a rushed ending.

But despite that, I still love the drama. The best points are the characters and the actors playing them. I cannot pick one actor who didn’t play his/her role well. They are so effective that it wasn’t hard to hate an antagonist or to empathize to a protagonist. There were numerous times that I wanted to throw things at the TV because of frustration or anger at the characters. Lol. There were also numerous times that I wanted to cry my heart out.

It’s a good drama all in all. It makes one think about the real meaning of marriage.

Below is the trailer. ^^

January Highlight #2: The Great American Circus

January 31, 2011 § Leave a comment

Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I saw a circus act. I don’t even remember if I saw one before ahaha. I think I did, but I was too young to remember. So I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about watching it.

Show was on January 13, 2011 in Cebu Coliseum. Despite the heat of the venue, the show was great!!!! I’m pretty sure I tweeted that it was AWESOME! Hazel (@hazel_zelee on twitter) and I were screaming on almost every act. I screamed the most during the Crossbow Masters’ act. Their set was undoubtedly the most nerve-wracking one that night.

And of course! The saber-like lightstick! Almost forgot about that lol. They call it a showlight. Or was it a showstick? Anyway, it really looked cool.

Ahaha I sound like a kid with a bagful of candy.

And this post wouldn’t be complete without pictures hehe.

January Highlight #1: Sinulog Fireworks Competition

January 25, 2011 § Leave a comment

As the title suggests, every month I’m featuring “highlights”. It could be an event, a trip, a concert (for next month and April 8D) or whatever major happening.

This month I’ve got two. Actually, there’s three but last year I featured “Sinulog” so I’m not gonna do it this time. My first highlight though is related to it. Okay, on to the post.

First highlight is the 3rd Sinulog Fireworks Competition held last January 15 at SM City Cebu. It was our first time watching it and we did it with a bang! (pun intended)

After the Sinulog procession (which ended early because of the rain), we went straight to SM City to get good parking spaces. Spent 3 hours waiting before it started. The wait was worth it because the fireworks and the resulting pictures were delightful =D. Too bad it rained so hard that it affected the fireworks quality. But nevertheless, it was still a sight to see.

There were 8 competitors and I for one enjoyed not only the fireworks but the screaming I did whenever I see a spectacular set. Hehehehe. I’ll be sure to watch the 4th competition next year. Already praying it won’t rain.

Here are the pictures I promised courtesy of my cousin, Fernand Vicoy.

Sophie’s Revenge

January 18, 2011 § Leave a comment

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a movie post. Oh wait. I did one about 3 weeks ago.
Okay. Another movie post haha.

I was in the middle of watching “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho” but didn’t want to watch the last 6 episodes if I didn’t watch it in one go. So I opted to watch a movie instead.

“Sophie’s Revenge” came highly recommended. It stars Zhang Ziyi, Peter Ho and So Ji-sub. Unlike Ziyi’s usual movies, this is a romantic comedy. Awww I watched 2 romcoms in a span of 3 weeks. 0_0

Ziyi plays Sophie, a comic book artist. Jeff, played by So Ji-sub, left Sophie for another woman, Joanna, just two months before their wedding. This left Sophie on a depressed state until finally, she decided to do everything she can to get Jeff back in time for the set wedding.

Being an imaginative woman, Sophie devised “strategies” which she also plans to publish in her new comic book. However, her first plan backfires. She then meets Gordon (Peter Ho) who Sophie thinks is Joanna’s past lover and engages his help.

It really isn’t the most original film there is. It is predictable. I’ve read reviews and I’m actually quite surprised none have mentioned that it is very similar to Meg Ryan’s “Addicted to Love”. This movie however is quirkier. It’s fun. Really fun.

Scorned women, well.. women in general can easily relate to this movie. I remembered fantasizing in the past (Yes! All in the past now!) about making an ex-boyfriend fall in love with me again and then rejecting him blah blah blah. Ahahaha.

It’s also refreshing to see Zhang Ziyi play a lighter role than her normal ones (refer to The Road Home, Memoirs of a Geisha, and House of Flying Daggers). She’s sooooo cute, animated and quirky here. And it’s not just Ziyi, the whole cast is great.

The screenplay is also good. There’s not much one can do with a typical and over-used plot. But with a great screenplay, the plot doesn’t seem as important.

I totally recommend this movie. Just don’t be too cynical and let yourself enjoy =D

It has an official site and check the trailer below.
