“The One That Got Away” is probably one of the most used topics there are in anything. Several shorts, books, and movies have been made around this theme. And of course songs too. This week’s LLP post is, you guessed it, about the one that got away.
The One That Got Away – Johnta Austin
Released in 2008
I don’t remember now how I came across this song. The video did not get released I think (I didn’t know Mel B was on it). I’m not sure this even got airplay. It was probably when I was routinely streaming 1.FM. The song is about regretting (aren’t they always?) the actions leading to the loss of that someone truly loved and asking, no, begging for another chance to make things right.
The One That Got Away – Tiffany Alvord and Chester See
Cover of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away”
Everybody knows this Katy Perry song. You are lying if you say you don’t. I wasn’t much into it when it got released in October 2011. I was browsing covers on Youtube last year and this one cover is apparently very popular. And I liked it. The tempo has been decreased so instead of it being a mid-tempo pop song, the song is a slow ballad. It is also a duet. I like this version more than the original one.
The One That Got Away – The Civil Wars
Released as the 1st single on June 11, 2013 of the 2nd album entitled “The Civil Wars”.
Heard this song on the TV show, Ravenswood. The usual among stories and songs about the one that got away is that the writer/singer is regretting losing that one person. This song however is different. The singer actually wishes that person to be the one that got away. The song tells that the singer regrets acting on the attraction/desire. The lyrics are spot on. There’s also something about the way the song is sung that really makes me feel the emotions one would have if in this situation.
“I miss the way you wanted me
When I was staying just out of your reach
Begging for the slightest touch
Ooh, you couldn’t get enough, mmm
Oh, if I could go back in time
When you only held me in my mind
Just a longing, gone without a trace
Oh, I wish I never ever seen your face
I wish you were the one
Wish you were the one that got away.”

Date Completed: January 15, 2014
Yep, you read that right. I finished it within a day, about 6-7 hours. Read it on one sitting (or lying, if we be technical about it, ’cause really I was lying in bed while reading it). I really liked it. My proof is that I missed precious sleep time on a work
day night and got only 3 hours of sleep.
Every time I got inside a bookstore, the book always caught my attention because the cover girl looks a lot like Angelina Jolie. But I never bought it those times. Wasn’t even tempted to because vampires. I have been very hesitant to read another vampire book ever since I bought all the Twilight books and ended up reading only the first book. Then, some time last month, this librarian I’m following posted a positive review saying it was surprisingly an enjoyable read. The review piqued my interest so I got an eBook. It also helped that I saw the trailer of the adapted movie that will be out next month.
I wouldn’t say it’s an incredibly good book. And not uncommon too. However, it certainly is a very enjoyable read. For me, it is one of those “one more chapter” books that we experience every now and then. I was getting ready for bed, gathering my blanket around me and thought “hey, why not read a chapter of this book I started at work?”. After one chapter, I was like “one more chapter”. And then, “I’ll read until chapter 5 then shut-eye”. And then I thought “F it. I’m reading half the book.” There are 24 chapters, so 12 chapters. Around 10 AM Manila time (9 PM EST), I was finishing chapter 12 and thought “Chapter 15. Promise.”. 1 and a half hour after, “Chapter 20!”. And then I finished chapter 20, looked at the time and saw it was close to 1 PM Manila time (12 AM EST) and decided to just finish the entire book. I probably would not have slept anyway. What with 4 chapters left. The suspense would keep my mind churning.
So I ended up with only 3 hours of sleep. If I was a bit younger, maybe 2 years younger, and if I wasn’t working on the night shift, that would have been fine. The circumstances are the opposite so it is difficult. But I do not have any regrets. None at all. I like the main character, Rose very much. She is flawed. Lissa, the other main character, is another flawed character, even more than Rose. I liked her too. The writing I thought was very even. The characters were written very well. Despite Lissa being a vampire (a royal at that) and Rose being a half-vampire, teenagers could still relate to their emotions, thoughts and behavior. I would have if I was a teenager. I will be reading the next book and probably the whole series some time this year.
I am excited for the movie too. It does look like they have changed some parts of the book for the movie based on the trailer. I liked who they casted for Rose though. The actress for Lissa does fit the desciption of book-Lissa. I’m not too sure with the Dimitri actor. The other casts looked okay too. The lines on the trailer also hint that the movie will be more humorous than the book, albeit still dark. And if the trailer song is anything to go by, it may have a good soundtrack too. Production doesn’t look too shabby as well. So I’m really really excited for the movie.
My rating on Goodreads is 4 stars (for Really Liked It).

As promised last week, this week’s LLP post includes new additions to my music library too. This time, the songs are Filipino songs or OPM (Original Pilipino Music). I used to watch music channels when I was (way way) younger but I don’t have the time to anymore. Since I started working, I would “discover” new songs through the cab’s radio. And now, through radio apps and the occasional mentions I read on Twitter. I “discovered” the songs below while in a cab en route to the office. The songs are in Tagalog, the Philippines’ national language. In attempt to be reader-friendly, I will translate (or at least try to) a few lines of each song.
Yakap – Charice
On Charice’s 4th album, Chapter 10, released on September 6, 2013. Original song by Ogie Alcasid.
This song is about love found again. If you know Tagalog, you would know that the lyrics is beautiful. Charice’s voice is as lovely as ever and her voice suits this song very well. Charice also sang this song so soulfully. I can really feel the emotion. The first time I heard this song, I got goosebumps all over. I just listened to the entire album on Grooveshark and I cannot wait to recommend it to everyone I know! Album available on iTunes.
Ako ay nagbalik, at muli kang nasilayan
Hindi na ‘ko muli pang lilisan
Dahil kung ikaw ang yakap ko,
Parang yakap ko ang langit
At yakap ko pati ang ‘yong ngiti.
I came back and saw you once more.
I will never leave again.
‘Cause when I embrace you,
It feels like I’m embracing heaven
And that I’m embracing your smile as well.
Sa ‘Yo Na Lang Ako – Karylle
On Karylle’s album entitled “K” released on October 11, 2013. Originally on the PhilPop’s 2013 album released on June 11, 2013 still by Karylle.
PhilPop or the Philippine Popular Music Festival is a songwriting competition held annually for amateur and professional Filipino songwriters and composers living in and out of the country. Sadly, for someone who loves music so much, I haven’t heard or even knew about the songs. I have corrected this and am already aware that there is just a month left for submission for this year’s competition.
Back to the song. The singer asks that someone if that person could make her life complete and if she could belong to him. Sigh. Lol. Love songs. Click here to purchase. The song isn’t on Grooveshark, unfortunately.
If it’s okay
If you can give me a chance
This love for you, won’t give up.
If it’s okay
Can you be the one
To complete this life of mine
If it’s okay, can I be yours?
Dati – Sam Concepcion, Trippy Dos Santos and Quest
Grand Winner of PhilPop 2013. On PhilPop’s 2013 album released on June 11, 2013.
This song! I love it! Obviously, a lot of Filipinos do too. I was telling my cousins about it last Sunday after church and they actually told me “Ate (older sis), you’re so late!”. Lol. It is the grand winner of last year’s PhilPop.
The song is about childhood love and how the singers wanted to have that love now that they’re older. It is very nostalgic for Filipinos my generation. There’s a part where the lyric goes “Parang Julio at Julia lagi tayong magkasama. Sabay tayong umiiyak pag inaapi si Sarah“. In English, “Like Julio and Julia, we were always together. We cried at the same time when Sarah was bullied.” Julio and Julia or Jules and Julie, The Twins of Destiny, and Sarah, from Princess Sarah were characters from popular cartoons in the ’80s and ’90s. Love it! Click here for the entire PhilPop 2013 album.
Di bat ikaw nga yung reyna at ako ang iyong hari
Ako yung prinsesang sagip mo palagi
Ngunit ngayoy marami ng nabagot nangyari
Ngunit di ang pagtingin na gaya pa rin ng dati.
Wasn’t it that you were the queen and I was the king?
I was the princess that you always saved.
But now a lot has changed and happened
But not my feelings that are still the same as before.
I realize my translations are bad. Lol. I didn’t say I was a good translator. Hope you enjoyed this week’s selection. The next LLP post will be special. I am very much excited for it. Stay tuned!
